Acerolife – nature’s richest source of vitamin C

Vitamin C is vitally important to maintain an immune system that functions normally – and a particularly abundant source of this essential nutrient is the acerola cherry. Givaudan’s Acerolife is a highly standardised acerola extract containing up to 34% vitamin C, which means that a lower dose is required to achieve 100% of the recommended daily intake. It is ideal for dietary supplements and food and beverage products, and is available carrier-free and in both organic and conventional formats.

Echinacea purpurea

Echinacea – traditional benefits supported by science

Native to North America, echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) has been part of the traditional Native American healing culture for centuries. Today, it’s known globally as a principal ingredient for immune health, with benefits supported by a number of scientific studies.

Our echinacea is grown and harvested in Central and Eastern Europe by trusted farmers known personally to Givaudan’s procurement team. We extract the key phytoactive components from the root and herb to ensure the highest quality finished product every time.

OatWell™ beta-glucan – promoting immunity via good gut health

The cereal fibres found in oat bran have been found to increase the diversity of gut microbiota, yielding a healthier microbiome. With 70-80% of the immune system residing in the gut, maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is imperative for a healthy immune system. OatWell™ is Givaudan’s beta-glucan-rich range of premium oat bran ingredients for overall gut health maintenance. It is extracted from high quality oats grown in accordance with sustainable agricultural practices. The oat kernels are turned into bran via a process that preserves the native structure and high molecular weight of the beta-glucans inside, enhancing their efficacy.

Acerolife – a case study in supply chain sustainability

Acerolife – a case study in supply chain sustainability

Givaudan’s Acerolife is derived from vitamin C-rich acerola cherries cultivated responsibly in northeast Brazil on small scale farms focused on maintaining biodiversity. There are strict limitations on agricultural inputs, with all herbicides banned from use. There is full traceability back to the field, while 20% of total farmland is dedicated to the preservation of native flora.

The acerola cherries are harvested by hand and processed carefully in order to preserve their naturally high vitamin C content, and we conduct ongoing research into the development of varieties with even higher vitamin C content. By adding additional value to the acerola they grow on their farms, the local communities who grow our raw materials are also able to increase their income.

Connecting relaxation and sleep to immune health

Givaudan’s global studies showed that consumers address stress, sleep and immunity together in a holistic way.

In Australia, 19% of consumers sought stress reduction as a way to boost their defences. Meanwhile in Japan, 23% of respondents cited tiredness and fatigue reduction as a key motivation for consuming functional foods that target immune health support.

This connection is based in science.

According to the Mayo Clinic, people who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick, and they’re also more likely to have a longer recovery if they do get sick. That’s because during sleep, the immune system releases the cells needed to fight inflammation and infection.

Consumer focus on addressing stress and mental health together with immunity has led to a surge in interest in products and activities that support relaxation.
