Native to India, basil is an aromatic plant that has been cultivated for its aroma for over 2,500 years. Basil is an annual herb with a highly prized aroma. The shiny, bright green leaves give off a strong, aromatic scent when rubbed, which is very characteristic of this plant. The aromatic molecules are contained in secretory glands on the leaves. When basil flowers, the stems are adorned with small white, pink or purple flowers.

The aerial parts are harvested during flowering, when the leaves contain a greater quantity and better quality of essential oil. Distillation takes place on the fresh material, as basil leaves lose their aroma as they dry. The composition of basil essential oil can vary according to various parameters specific to growing areas and practices. This leads to the existence of several chemotypes: basil oil from Egypt is of the ‘linalool’ chemotype, while basil oil from India or Vietnam is of the ‘estragol (or methylchavicol)’ chemotype.
