Orange Blossom Absolute Spain
Our Spanish Orange Blossom Absolute is characterised by its fresh and green notes, with a very balanced olfactory impact. It is a perfect complement to citrus notes, acts as a natural fixative, can be used as a modifier in chypre or woody accords thanks to its animal notes, or to accentuate the fruity notes of apricot.
Citrus aurantium var. amara, known as the bitter orange or Seville orange tree, is native to Asia Minor. It was introduced to Europe, particularly Spain, by Arab traders in the ninth and the tenth centuries.
In Spain, the harvest takes place in early spring, when the warmth replaces the cold of winter. As with olive trees, bitter orange blossoms are harvested using a tractor that shakes the trunks. The blossoms fall over a net at the base of the trees in an ecstatic rain of scents. The pickers then remove most of the branches and leaves by hand and use a sieve to separate the flowers from the leaves and debris.
The flowers must be processed quickly to prevent oxidation from the sun’s rays. So the flowers are quickly transported in jute bags to our factory in Spain, where they are first converted to concrete by solvent extraction and then to absolute by ethanol washing.
Seville was the first city in the world to produce bitter oranges, which is why the fruit is known as the ‘orange of Seville’.
