Exploring the origins of clove leaf and eugenol in Madagascar

We are proud to celebrate nearly 10 years of sourcing responsibly through our project in Madagascar.
Our NATEMA (Natural Extracts Madagascar) facility produces clove leaf oil, eugenol, and other ingredients for our flavour and fragrance creations. These ingredients are supplied globally to other flavour and fragrance houses through Givaudan Flavour Ingredients (GFI) and Fragrance Ingredients Business (FIB).

With support from the Givaudan Foundation, our local presence in Madagascar helps ensure a secure, sustainable supply of clove oil and its derivatives, enhances transparency, and reduces environmental impact.
Our field teams are committed to travelling throughout the region to visit and buy clove directly from farmers, distillers, and producer associations, establishing a collection network based on trust and loyalty.
Supporting communities and the environment
We responsibly source clove from around 1,000 dedicated smallholder farmers who depend on it as their primary cash crop.
Our ethical sourcing is supported by UEBT and Fair for Life certifications, along with a 2024 human rights impact assessment launched in collaboration with third party experts to address labour and gender equality risks.
We empower our partners through training on human rights, child labour, and best practices in agriculture and distillation, and ensure traceability with our in-house iSource tool.

The Givaudan Foundation is also active in the remote areas where we source clove, supporting projects that safeguard the environment while increasing producers’ revenue. Our initiatives include replanting trees for firewood and promoting advanced distillation equipment for local clove leaf oil production.

Strengthening the local economic structure
In 2016, we opened a new facility where the locally harvested clove leaf is processed rather than exported in its crude form for transformation elsewhere. Givaudan’s NATEMA plant is a joint venture with our longstanding local partner Henri Fraise Fils, spans eight hectares and is Sedex-certified.
As Madagascar’s largest producer, we sustainably process hundreds of tonnes of clove leaf oil and eugenol annually, helping ensure a consistent supply both in terms of quality and quantity. This plant is a key part of our commitment to establishing direct sourcing models in countries of origin, providing the best ingredients to our customers and creating value in our partner communities.
