Joint industry-government event plans to develop Singapore as Asia Pacific alternative protein hub

Givaudan, the world’s leading flavour and fragrance company, has shared its leading alternative proteins expertise at a major industry roundtable event, backed by the Singapore government’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The event is part of Singapore’s agri-food development plan exploring opportunities in future foods, launched by the country’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, earlier this year.

Flavio Garofalo, Global Category Director Savoury Flavours and Natural Ingredients, delivered a keynote speech on the taste and functional aspects of plant proteins to government officials and leading food industry representatives from across the region, at the event that was held on 19-20 August.

His speech focused on overcoming the taste challenges often presented by alternative proteins, and the knowledge and expertise Givaudan has gained through extensive research with these proteins. He also looked to the future, with a review of the various plant-based proteins highlighted in a recent White Paper produced in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley.

Commenting Garofalo said: “Interest in alternative proteins and meat substitutes is growing rapidly across Asia-Pacific markets, in response to consumer interest in healthier food choices and the need to feed growing populations in a sustainable way. With our presence in the region and our recognised expertise, Givaudan is ideally positioned to support the development and growth of alternative proteins in Asia.

“Supporting knowledge sharing events such as this, as well as recent investments we’ve made in the region, for example India and Indonesia, reflects our 2020 growth strategy which includes a focus on high-growth markets in the APAC region”, concludes Garofalo.
