The common juniper is a bushy shrub that grows in the temperate and cold regions of the northern hemisphere. It grows wild in Europe, North America and Asia, where it is found as far north as the Himalayas. The tree morphologically adapts to the climatic conditions of its surroundings: it takes on a slender form on the plains and becomes a creeping plant in mountainous areas. This coniferous tree, covered with sharp-pointed needles, bears fleshy green fruits with a characteristic star shape.

When juniper berries ripen after two years, they darken to a purple or blue-black colour. They are harvested by hand by carefully beating the fruit-laden branches. The ripe berries are then gathered, while the unripe berries are left for the next year's harvest. They are then dried and spread out on matsbefore being steam distilled.
