Blue Tansy Oil Morocco

Blue Tansy essential oil has a very distinctive olfactory profile. The first notes develop a strong camphoraceous and aromatic dimension, with almost food-like notes reminiscent of pesto. As the aromatic wave begins to sweeten, round and lactonic facets emerge, then the liqueur side of macerated fruits.
Native to the Mediterranean region, it has gradually disappeared due to overharvesting of wild plants. Today, the annual tansy has been reintroduced and cultivated in Morocco. It is an annual plant, 40 centimetres high, with yellow flower heads that bloom from August to October.
During the flowering period, the aerial parts of the plant are cut and distilled to obtain blue tansy essential oil. Tanacetum annuum is often called ‘blue tansy’. The deep midnight blue colour of the oil is due to the presence of chamazulene in the essential oil, a molecule formed during distillation from the sesquiterpene matricin, which explains why the plant is not blue but the oil is.
Tanacetum annuum, or blue tansy, belongs to the Asteraceae family, which includes chamomiles such as Roman chamomile or German chamomile. Blue tansy belongs to the same family and is sometimes called ‘Moroccan blue chamomile’.
