World Environment Day 2026
Today is World Environment Day; a UN initiative designed to catalyse action for the environment. This year, the theme #NowForClimate, champions concrete climate action today.
Why #NowForClimate?
The climate emergency demands urgent, purposeful action. For Givaudan, climate action is not just a long-term ambition; it’s reflected in the choices we make today, guided by science and driven by measurable progress.
A heritage of leadership and progress
Givaudan was among the first global companies to join the UN Business Ambition for 1.5°C in 2019 through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Since then, we have made meaningful progress in reducing our operational emissions, while acknowledging that the journey is far from over. Our Net-Zero Transition Plan sets out how we will reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across our entire value chain by 2045.
Concrete action #NowForClimate
While this may feel like a distant goal, we’re making progress every day as we act #NowForClimate. Here are some the ways we’re delivering progress:
Cutting emissions at the source (scope 1+2)
Our journey to net-zero starts within our own walls, by changing the way we use and source energy. Since 2015, we have successfully reduced our scope 1+2 emissions by 50% whilst continuing to grow as a business. The main drivers behind include:
- Energy efficiency programmes, including regular internal and over 40 third party energy audits, optimisation of heating and ventilation systems, waste heat recovery, and improvements to our manufacturing processes.
- Reaching 100% purchased renewable electricity in our operations as of end of 2024.
Decarbonising our value chain (scope 3)
More than 90% of our total emissions lie outside our direct operations. These are embedded in the raw materials we source, the products we create, and the logistics that connect them. Reducing these emissions requires a whole-value-chain effort, from the suppliers we work with to the customers we serve. As of the end of 2025 we had stabilised scope 3 emissions despite the rapid growth of our business. Some of the ways we are working on this include:
- Advancing sustainable procurement through our Sourcing4Good programme.
- Implementing regenerative agriculture practices for key ingredients, with each programme tailored to the specific needs of the supply chain.
- Designing low-carbon creations – using biotechnology, renewable carbon sources, and concentrated formulations that reduce both material use and transport emissions.
- Recovering and upcycling materials across our production processes, turning waste into valuable resources.
Accelerating action together
Delivering progress and action at this scale, today and in the future, is not possible without the continued efforts and support of colleagues, partners, suppliers and customers. Collaboration is key to our ability to continue to deliver meaningful impact and we’re proud to be driving collective action every day.
Examples of these efforts include:
- Expanding renewable energy through partnerships like our recent 10-year VPPA agreement with PepsiCo, Smurfit WestRock and Statkraft, which is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by an estimated 32,000 metric tonnes per year across Europe.
- Working with partners who can provide materials with a reduced product carbon footprint (PCF) such as through our collaborations with chemical companies like BASF and Dow.
- Pioneering innovative product development such as our PrimalHyal™ 50 Life innovation which was developed collaboratively in and outside of Givaudan and recognised at the COP30 climate conference with an SB COP award.
External recognition of our progress
External recognition of our performance is an important way we hold ourselves to account today as we continue our journey. For example, in January 2026, for the seventh consecutive year, we were awarded a CDP A rating for climate action, and in May 2026, we were awarded another CDP A for supplier engagement, reflecting the commitment across our value chain.
