Clary Sage Oil France Orpur™
Clary sage essential oil has an aromatic, floral, and fruity fragrance with sweet, ambery undertones. As it dries, it reveals facets of cut hay and tobacco.
It blends well with essential oils such as bergamot, cedar, geranium, jasmine, juniper, lavender and sandalwood.
Salvia sclarea, or clary sage, is a very fragrant plant covered with small, fine hairs and has stiff, rather branching stems. The leaves are large, green-grey, opposite, generally stalkless and oval or heart-shaped at the base, forming a rosette. The flowers are white or pale lily-blue, arranged in rather loose racemes.
In France, clary sage is the third most cultivated aromatic plant after lavender and lavandin. Clary sage has a maximum life cycle of five years. There is no harvest in the first year, essential oil production begins in the second year and continues for two to a maximum of four years. Harvesting takes place during flowering, between July and August, at the hottest time of day, when the aerial part begins to glow due to the presence of essential oil droplets.
The harvested flowering stems are dried on the field beforehand for 24 to 48 hours. This ‘pré-fané’ technique is a key step that enables the plant to release the water it has stored, after which the dried plant is steam distilled to obtain the essential oil.
In many ancient cultures, sage was said to have unparalleled protective and cleansing powers. Its name ‘Clear Eye’ also meant that the scent of clary sage enhanced vision and helped people to distinguish good from evil.
