Tagetes flowers

Tagetes oil has a fruity, green scent with herbaceous and floral undertones. It reveals vibrant, fruity nuances of apple and juicy apricot with subtle accents of tropical mango.

The fresh and minty facets of tagetes can easily be used as a top note or in combination with floral notes. The fresh and fruity notes of tagetes essential oil are also very interesting when used with woody accords.

Tagetes, native to Central America, is part of the Asteraceae family, also known as the daisy or sunflower family. Tagetes (Mexican marigold) is botanically distinctive, boasting aromatic foliage and small golden blooms. Its straight stems can grow up to two metres high. They bear narrow, serrated, pointed, khaki-green leaves.

Tagetes seeds are usually planted after the first rains in early spring. By the end of February, the plants have reached their full height, but they have not yet started to flower. It is the flower that contains the essential oil. These have secretory hairs on the outside of the corolla tube that are full of fragrant molecules. Harvesting begins in April, when the plants are in full bloom. This continues until May or June, when the plants begin to dry out and produce seeds.
