Orris Pallida Butter 8% irones France
Orris is a contrasting duality, rough in its earthy side, but also round like a musk with omnipresent powdery notes. Woody, soft, unctuous, sour, green and slightly aromatic, the oily side binds all the notes in a round, modest and balanced harmony.
Orris butter is found in both masculine and feminine floral compositions. It blends perfectly with leathery or violet accords and adds a floral and woody touch to liqueur reconstitutions. Its earthy facets are also fully expressed in woody and amber bases. The slightest touch of orris takes perfumes to a whole new dimension.
Orris pallida is a perennial that likes light and dry soils but also needs plenty of sun, it will not flower in the shade. It has rhizomes in which it stores its nutrient reserves. The rhizome is planted between July and October and the flower opens the following spring.
The rhizomes are harvested between August and September, during the vegetative period. After removing the soil and any impurities, they are washed several times with water, sometimes peeled and finally dried for several months. They are then ground and packed in jute sacks. Every year, between October and November, some of the rhizomes are saved for replanting.
The ground rhizomes are then processed into essential oil by steam distillation, where the hot steam releases the oil as it passes through the plant material. After each production, the essential oil is sent to the laboratory to measure the irones content. The essential oil is then standardised at 8% irones.
The iris is the emblem of French royalty. Catherine de Medici first established its use as a perfume in the 16th century; when she arrived in France in 1533, she brought with her Florentine talc, a product based on iris rhizomes, which she used to lighten her complexion.
