Native to central and southern Europe, oregano is a very common aromatic plant throughout the world. Oregano’s hairy, reddish, erect stems bear dark green, oval, stalked leaves. The stems are topped by numerous spiky clusters of small, pink flowers that bloom throughout the summer.

Oregano tops are harvested early in the flowering cycle. Wild plants are cut with a sickle and quickly distilled.

Did you know?

There is often confusion between oregano and marjoram: Origanum vulgare, also known as ‘wild marjoram’, is different from Origanum majorana, ‘true marjoram’.
