The grapefruit is a small, subtropical tree of the citrus family. Although its botanical origins are uncertain, it appears to be a hybrid of the pomelo (Citrus maxima) and the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). It is thought to have been crossed and cultivated in Barbados by the botanist Hughes in 1750, hence the name ‘Barbados grapefruit’. The grapefruit tree is an evergreen tree with glossy leaves and delicately scented white flowers that give way to large, golden fruits. The rind of the grapefruit is full of small glands filled with essential oil.

The world’s largest producer of grapefruit is now the state of Florida in the United States. The mild, humid climate on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico is ideal for growing the tree. Harvesting usually takes place from January to June. The pericarp is cold-pressed to release the aromatic components.

Did you know?

In grapefruit essential oil we find nootkatone, a ketone that gives a very characteristic facet to this citrus fruit. This molecule is also present in vetiver essential oil, giving it grapefruit notes in the base.
