Frankincense Oil Somalia FairWild

Frankincense resin

Used since the earliest perfumes, frankincense is known for its distinctive ‘old church’ scent. In its opening notes, frankincense develops a powerful spicy and citrus profile, wrapped in a resinous warmth. These notes evolve into a warmer, spicy, persistent character with ambery and woody-balsamic notes.

Frankincense blossoms at the heart of the oriental accords to enhance the woody notes and add a fresh facet to the balsamic tones.

Boswellia carterii, commonly known as the olibanum or frankincense tree, is a member of the Burseraceae family. Native to the Horn of Africa, with a significant presence in Somalia, this tree has its roots in the Arabian Peninsula, mainly in the countries of Oman and Yemen. Boswellia carterii is a small, bushy tree with compound leaves that thrives in warm climates and prefers rocky, well-drained, calcareous soils. Resin ducts under its bark produce a resin resin that is naturally exuded in warm conditions.

In Somalia, cutting takes place during the dry season when the trees are in their vegetative phase and have shed their leaves. Once the tree has been cut, collectors wait two to three weeks before harvesting the resin.

Once harvested, the resin is manually sorted by size and colour and left to dry for 12 weeks before being distilled into essential oil.
