Cypriol is native to India and grows in riverbeds in the Madhya Pradesh region. It is an herbaceous plant with a papyrus-like morphology. It has erect, angular stems bearing short, slender, light green leaves. The aromatic rhizomes form a dense root system.

The roots are harvested from February to June by the inhabitants of the local villages. The raw material is collected in the villages and then transported to the production facility. The roots are washed and dried before being processed in the same way as vetiver roots.

Cypriol roots are processed into essential oil by steam distillation.
