Detail of cypress conifer

Cypress essential oil has an aromatic, fresh and invigorating head note, with a resinous pine scent and a balsamic amber base.

It is often found at the heart of colognes or aromatic fougères. It works perfectly with dry, cedar-like woods, giving them a unique, fresh character.

From plant to harvest

Originally from Asia Minor, the cypress spread throughout the Mediterranean and became one of its emblematic tree. This conifer can reach a height of 30 metres and live for several hundred years. The branches are numerous and compact, giving the tree a tapered, candle-like shape.

It is naturally found in hedges, gardens and field margins, promoting biodiversity and crop protection. Cypress pruning allows branches to be harvested for the production of essential oil.

The raw material is processed into essential oil by steam distillation, where the hot steam causes the oil to be released as it passes through the plant material. The steam carries the fragrant molecules through the condenser where the oil and water return to their liquid form. The oil is separated from the water by decantation.

Did you know?

Greek mythology tells many stories about the cypress, but the most famous is that of Cyparissus. Mad with grief after accidentally killing his favourite stag, Cyparissus killed himself. Apollo then turned the young man into an eternal tree, which has carried his name ever since.
