Clove Bud Oil Indonesia
Clove bud oil has a comforting and warm spicy sent, powerful and delicate at the same time, with whiffs of floral and woody facets.
Often at the heart of spicy notes for its eugenol and leathery notes, clove is also used in carnation reconstitutions to add a touch of naturalness to the accord.
The clove tree is an evergreen tropical tree that can reach a height of ten to twenty metres. Native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, it is also grown in Madagascar, Zanzibar and the Philippines.
Cloves are cultivated on the tree when they have reached their maximum size and begin to turn red. Cloves are harvested by hand when the flower buds are still closed but have reached their maximum growth. Harvesters use ladders to reach the branches of the clove trees and pick the flower buds by hand. Several rounds of harvesting are needed as the flowers do not develop uniformly.
The buds are spread out on mats and left to dry in the sun for several days. This produces the familiar dark brown colour. When the cloves are completely dry, they are sorted and cleaned. The buds are steam distilled and at the end of the process the essential oil is extracted by decantation.
Clove buds have always been a sought-after spice, whether in cooking, for their fragrance or for their medicinal properties. Today, it is common practice in dentistry to use either eugenol – an active ingredient found in cloves and their essential oil – or clove buds in certain treatments to relieve toothache.
