The Atlas cedar can reach 50 metres in height, over two metres in diameter and live up to 2,000 years! When it first starts growing, it has a tall, slender profile; over time, its branches spread horizontally to form a tree with a flattened crown. The evergreen foliage is made up of dark green to bluish needles, giving it another common name, blue cedar. Cedrus atlantica is considered a ‘national treasure’ in Morocco and forms the Atlas forest, one of the country’s largest forests, which is vital for providing fresh air and protecting the country from the encroaching Sahara desert.

The Atlas cedar is highly prized for its dense wood. It is only felled when the tree is dead or to allow young trees to grow. It is used to make beautiful wooden ornaments and sculptures that adorn the city of Fès, as well as furniture and chests with an eternal life cycle, impressive palace entrances and stunning libraries. It is therefore an important cultural and architectural heritage of the Atlas region. Atlas cedar essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of sawdust from woodworking or carpentry.

Did you know?

Atlas cedar is sometimes called the immortal tree because the wood contains natural insecticide and fungicide molecules that protect it from insects and microorganisms even after the tree has died.
