Eastern white cedar is a conifer native to the cold temperate regions of Asia and North America. In Canada it is known as the white cedar. It grows spontaneously in continental climates with harsh winters in the north-eastern United States and south-eastern Canada. It has a conical shape and can reach heights of up to 15 metres. A member of the Cupressaceae family, cedar has overlapping, scaly leaves similar to those of the cypress.
Yellow-green with a bluish underside, the evergreen leaves turn gold or bronze in some varieties. It is the young twigs that are distilled to make essential oil.
While the French explorer Jacques Cartier was on his second expedition to Canada in 1535, his crew was struck by scorbut. The Amerindians offered a decoction of a local tree as a treatment. It’s thought that the tree was Thuja occidentalis, whose leaves and bark are rich in vitamin C.
