Eucalyptus globulus is an evergreen tree native to Australia that can grow to over 60 metres tall. Also known as the blue resin tree, Eucalyptus globulus has bluish bark that peels off in long strips. Its young leaves are silvery blue, while its adult leaves are deep green.
Eucalyptus plantations were introduced in Yunnan, China, in the 1960s and 1970s to reforest the hills. Today, Yunnan accounts for 90% of the world’s eucalyptus oil production. In addition to essential oil, eucalyptus is widely grown for timber, paper and as an ornamental tree. It is valued for its rapid growth, adaptability to different soil types and versatility in different applications.
Leaf harvesting for essential oil takes place throughout the year. When harvested, the leaves are taken immediately to the processing plant to ensure the best possible quality. They are sorted to remove dead or damaged leaves, crushed or cut into small pieces and distilled into essential oil. It completes its journey through the rectification process to rectify the eucalyptol content to around 80%.
In Australia, eucalyptus leaves are the main food source for the koala, whose digestive system is uniquely adapted to break down the tough leaves.
